Dear Parents and Students,
Summer break is a time for fun and relaxation, but did you know it can also lead to a "summer slide" in learning? Research shows that students can lose significant ground in foundational skills like reading and math over the summer. For instance, students can lose about 2.6 months of grade-level math skills and, if they don't read consistently, potentially an entire grade level in reading!
At SJWCA, we are committed to preventing this summer slide and ensuring our students are fully prepared for the next grade. That's why we're strongly encouraging summer learning.
This summer, we ask students to read often and explore diverse genres. In addition, students entering grades 1-8 will complete i-Ready assignments in both reading and math. i-Ready is an adaptive program that provides personalized, appropriately challenging work, growing with your child as they learn. Consistent weekly engagement with these assignments will keep skills sharp and help students become even stronger readers and mathematicians by the fall.
Here’s what students should aim for:
Reading:
Rising 1st Grade: Students should be encouraged to read often, but complete at least 3-5 stories per week. They can read on their device with Epic! (https://www.getepic.com/) or RazKids (https://www.raz-kids.com/.) Students should complete the reading log assigned by their teacher.
Rising 2-8: Complete one i-Ready reading lesson per week. Students should try to finish each lesson in a single sitting for the best results.
Rising 4: Students entering grades 4 will also have a reading journal assignment in Google Classroom.
Rising 5-8: Students in grades 5-8 will be assigned two novels, one assigned and one choice and need to complete writing prompts associated with those novels. Assignments can be found in Google Classroom.
Math: Complete two i-Ready math lessons per week. Again, aim to finish each lesson in one sitting.
Students should complete these weekly assignments through August 10th.
Students can log into i-Ready at https://login.i-ready.com/. They've been using this platform all year and already have their usernames and passwords. If you need your child's password after we are closed, please contact the office at [email protected].
Even though school is out, we're still here to support you! If you have any questions or concerns this summer, please don't hesitate to reach out to me or Ms. Gallina via email or Class Dojo. We can't wait to welcome students back this fall!
Sincerely,
Stephanie-Ann Germann
